Basic Steps: This project was tricky, in that it involved convincing my husband that painting the space black was not going to make the room feel too dark. I had a mood board of magazine tears taped to the walls for about two months before he was convinced. After that milestone, we ripped up the carpet, had the flooring installed and then painted. We assembled the shelving, applied the wallpaper to the inset ceiling and put up the chandelier. Then came furniture, drapes and finishing touches.

This lovely dining room makeover has made the blog rounds a bit — you may have seen it on Poppytalk last week — but it was too beautiful a transformation not to share. Abbey and her husband purchased this 1800s farmhouse in upstate NY a mere four weeks ago, and already they are hard at work turning it into a cozy, vintage-style space with tons of light and character. I love the copper details, including the vintage light fixture she found for $7 (!) and the circle of stamped pennies on the wall. If this is what Abbey can accomplish in just four weeks, I can’t wait to see how the rest of the house turns out! Great job, Abbey!

This dining room used to be a part of the garage that [the Samartans] had converted to add more livable square footage to their home and I was brought onto the project to bring life into the space. First thing was first, deciding on what this room would be. We tinkered with the idea of a sitting room, but since they already had a living room in the home, Stacia and Phil wanted a space that would be more useful, so we decided that a formal dining room would be the best decision

Above: Felicia assembled her dining room’s table and bench using DIY instructions from Anna White (Table, Bench). They’re stained using Varathane’s American Walnut. The hanging light fixture is Pottery Barn’s Rustic Glass Pendant. The walls are painted in Behr’s Porpoise.

this before & after comes from interior designer matthew lanphier in los angeles. he worked on this budget dining room makeover in chicago, focusing on keeping things as affordable as possible. matthew removed the wallpaper, repainted the walls, reupholstered chairs in sunbrella fabric (to prevent fading from the sunny windows), and then redid the chairs by sanding and spray painting them (professional refinishing wasn’t in the budget). matthew calls the new look “tailored, yet whimsical” and i love the way everything feels clean, fresh and modern. great work, matthew!

Today’s before & after comes from Sherry Quam Taylor. Her home was built in 1903 and after demolishing and gutting the entire first floor, she and her husband felt like they finally had a space that felt like their own. In addition to new Tudor archways and crown moulding, Sherry and her husband made over their dining room from top to bottom, including new wallpaper from Osbourne & Little, dark chocolate floors and important family mementos like a vintage mirror that belonged to Sherry’s grandparents. I love the way they updated this space and am so thrilled she shared it with us today. Thanks, Sherry!

Cost: $5000 (for all custom woodwork throughout the house, including the bookshelf) and $300 (paint, wood, fabric, and floor work in dining room) Basic Steps: The dining room involved patching, caulking, and painting the ceiling and walls. Then we installed the picture rail, added molding and wood to the lower portion of the walls, and caulked and painted them. The paint on the ceiling is Behr Skyline Steel; Behr Silver Hill for the walls. All furniture was thrifted except for kid chairs, which are from Ikea. If I can do it, you can too! My advice is to not let yourself get overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. Just do a little bit whenever you get a chance, and eventually you’ll get ‘er done!

In an ideal world, we would all move into our respective apartments and houses, hire a few contractors, buy some furniture, and pump out our brand-new dream home in a couple of days. This, however, is largely out of the question for most of us—budget, not to mention time and other commitments, often gets in the way. This is why home renovation projects, no matter how completed they are in one’s mind, can often span across several years. No matter how begrudgingly we accept this reality, a beautiful home, one that you can truly call your own, is definitely worth the wait (and saved pennies). Just ask Adri and Jeremy Lentine, the adorable couple behind Dream Book Design. They moved into their Phoenix, Arizona home earlier this year and have been tackling the renovating slowly but surely ever since. Two self-proclaimed “budgeteers,” the couple seldom buys anything new, opting instead for vintage finds, affordable DIYs, and discount steals. With this penny-pinching credo in mind, the Lentines set to work on renovating their dining room. The previous iteration was a cramped, clashing, and dismally-lit space, filled with inappropriate floor tiles and out-of-place light fixtures. The end result, a combination of budget eBay finds, beautiful added moldings, and opened up space, is stunning. And accomplished for a little over $4,000, it proves that style, thrift, and time can be a winning combination for a beautiful space. Check out more photos, plus the complete object/budget breakdown after the jump!

The lesson I’ve learned from this Before & After is that if formal dining isn’t your thing, you can turn your dining room into an awesome home library — that’s a valuable lesson in my book. Jennifer enlisted the help of her friend, interior designer Autumn Clemons, to revamp this beige box and turn it into a dark, dramatic and ultra-modern space. Splurging on key pieces like the curtains and the sculptural light fixture was a wise decision; they really stand out and pull the entire look together. I’m sure this room will see far more use than it did prior to the redesign. Great job, Jennifer and Autumn!
